A total of 48 OFWs have also returned since April 30, bringing the total number of repatriates to 1,413 as of May 7, according to a press release from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). Read more

According to news from the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), Father Edwin “Edu” Gariguez helped call attention to the plight of the Mangyans, the native people of Mindoro, whose livelihood was being destroyed by mining operations. He was involved in several protests including an 11-day hunger strike in 2009, and is co-founder of the Alliance against Mining (ALAMIN). Read more

According to a press release, the OFWs were hired as land and sea-based crew members of a fishing company in PNG. But the company was unable to start its fishing operations due to documentation problems, leaving the crew members stranded and unpaid. Read more

A total of 12,429 workers were hired on the spot (HOTS) in the nationwide 2012 Labor Day Job and Livelihood Fairs held by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

“The number of applicants who got hired represented 19% of the total 64,916 applicants who have qualified,” said labor chief Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz, according to a DOLE press release. Read more

DOLE Regional Director Exequiel R. Sarcauga announced that the 9:00 am-5:00 pm event at the Tacloban City Convention Center (Astrodome) will feature 12 overseas recruitment agencies. These will offer at least 4,000 overseas job orders for immediate deployment–i.e. within two weeks’ time. Read more
