Labor chief Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz and Jordanian Labor Minister Maher Al Waked have signed an agreement in Jordan that will regulate the recruitment of Filipino household service workers (HSWs), so that the Philippines can resume the deployment of maids to the country, according to a Philippine Daily Inquirer report.
It is hoped that the pact will end illegal recruitment of Filipino HSWs, 5,000 of whom are estimated to have come to Jordan illegally in spite of the existing deployment ban on HSWs, which the Philippines imposed in 2008. Read more

The Philippine Embassy in Beijing and the Philippine Consulates General in Chongqing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Xiamen, Hong Kong and Macau are advising the public to be wary of employment offers in semi-skilled jobs in China, as these sectors remain restricted and closed to foreigners.
Filipinos are warned anew to beware of falling prey to unscrupulous parties who offer them jobs as household service workers (HSWs), teachers or musicians in China after the embassy and consulates general observed an increasing number of Filipinos who were recruited illegally. Read more
More caregivers needed in Taiwan

Taiwan is expected to hire more caregivers to attend to its aging population, said the Pilipino Manpower Agencies Accredited to Taiwan (Pilmat).

New “offloading” guidelines will boost anti-trafficking drive — VP

Vice President Jejomar C Binay expressed confidence last week that the newly-approved guidelines for departure of international-bound passengers by the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) will boost the fight against human trafficking.
According to a press release from the Office of the Vice President, Binay, who serves as chairman emeritus of the IACAT, said the new guidelines are more comprehensive because of IACAT’s wider membership, which includes non-government organizations (NGOs). “We made a point to incorporate all their inputs,” he added. VP orders mandatory interviews for repatriated OFWs

Vice President Jejomar C Binay has mandated that all repatriated overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) regardless of origin will now be interviewed upon arrival in the country.
According to a press release from the Office of the Vice President (OVP), Binay ordered the mandatory interviews after the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) discovered on January 7 that a minor was allegedly among 56 OFWs who arrived from Syria. Read more
January-November remittances reach US$18.3 billion

Remittances from overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) coursed through banks for the first eleven months of 2011 amounted to US$18.3 billion, 7.3% higher than the level posted in the same period last year.
For November alone, remittances grew by 10.6% to reach $1.8 billion, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Amando M Tetangco, Jr announced yesterday, according to a BSP press release. This monthly level of remittances is the highest on record thus far. Read more
