OWWA honors 2011 Model OFW Families

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) has given two Cebuano families the national award in the land-based category and sea-based sector, respectively, after they were chosen from among 17 regional winners all over the country in the 2011 Model OFW Family of the Year Awards (MOFYA).
The Astillero and Caminero families were honored along with two seafarers, who won the Outstanding Achievement in Community Projects and Entrepreneurship special awards in the yearly competition, according to a press release from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). Read more
New shepherd leads Archdiocese of Manila

The Catholic Church in the Philippines rejoiced as a new shepherd, Archbishop Luis Antonio G Tagle, was installed last December 12 to lead the Archdiocese of Manila.
Tagle, 54, a native of Imus, Cavite, was chosen by Pope Benedict XVI to take over as 79-year-old Cardinal Gaudencio Rosales stepped down after eight years of service. Read more
Remittances reach US$1.8 billion in October

Remittances coursed through banks grew to US$1.8 billion in October 2011, higher by 6.2% than the level posted in the same month in 2010 and the highest monthly level of remittances recorded thus far, according to Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).
As a result, cumulative remittances for January−October 2011 reached $16.5 billion, registering an increase of 7.0%, said BSP Governor Amando M Tetangco Jr. Read more

The Philippine Embassy in Oslo reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) that it has received complaints that various unlicensed, unaccredited and informal Norwegian Language Schools/Courses are proliferating in the Philippines.
The Norwegian Government has not accredited, licensed or recognized any Norwegian Language School/Course operating in the Philippines for profit, nor does it deal or cooperate with any agent or agency. Read more
5 POEA officers cleared of human trafficking charges

The Department of Justice (DOJ) dismissed human trafficking charges against five Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) officers after the evidence did not establish that their delay in canceling the licenses of three recruitment agencies was intentional.
According to a Philippine Star report, the POEA officers are Alejandro Padaem, Jesus Gabriel Domingo, Marieta de la Cruz, Ernesto Vistro and Nascel Gabito. Read more

27 kiosks now serve OFWs in POEA main office

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) opened 10 more kiosks at its main office in Mandaluyong City, making available a total of 27 kiosks where overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) can have their overseas employment certificates (OECs) processed.

Manila to host 2nd Abu Dhabi Dialogue in 2012

Labor chief Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz announced last week that the Abu Dhabi Dialogue, an important event for 20 migrant destination and migrant origin countries in Asia, will conduct its 2nd Ministerial Consultation in Manila on April 19, 2012.
According to Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) news, Baldoz made the announcement after speaking with the current chairman of the Abu Dhabi Dialogue H.E.
