PH ready for OFWs from Syria — Baldoz

Labor chief Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz said this week that government is ready to receive and assist overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), mostly women domestic service workers, as mandatory repatriation is already in place in Syria, according to a Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) press release.
Baldoz issued the statement after the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) raised the crisis alert level in Syria from Alert Level 3 to Alert Level 4 in view of the escalating violence in that country. Under Alert Level 4, the Philippine government will implement a mandatory repatriation of OFWs at its own expense. Read more

DFA seeks to defer lifting of deployment ban to Nigeria

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has requested the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to put its own recommendation for the lifting of the ban on the deployment of Filipino workers to Nigeria on hold, as a result of the recent bombings in the northern part of Africa’s most populous country, according to a DFA press release.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert F Del Rosario has requested Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz for a 90-day deferment of the lifting of the deployment ban, after Al-Qaeda-linked extremists set off bombs in several churches there on Christmas Day, killing as many as 40 people. Read more
DFA recommends lifting of deployment ban to Nigeria

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Friday that it is recommending the lifting of the deployment ban of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to Nigeria effective January 1, 2012 due to the improved security situation in the Niger Delta.
“We have reviewed the overall security situation in Nigeria and have concluded that the insurgency in the Niger Delta has been properly addressed,” Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert F del Rosario said in a letter to labor chief Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz, according to a DFA press release. Read more
PH is world’s BPO hub — DOLE

An overwhelming majority, 98.1%, of applicants registered in the country’s online job matching system, the Phil-JobNet, prefer local jobs as employment opportunities in the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector continue to remain robust, said labor chief Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz.
According to a Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) press release, a report from the Bureau of Local Employment (BLE) showed that BPO jobs topped the list of vacancies posted by private sector employers in the Phil-JobNet system. Opportunities for call center service workers, in particular, rose consistently from the first to the third quarters of 2011, affirming the Philippines’ status as the BPO hub of the world. Read more
Flash appeal for Sendong victims launched

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announced that a consolidated flash appeal for humanitarian assistance for the victims of tropical storm Sendong (Washi) was launched last week.
The appeal was made by the humanitarian community in the Philippines, composed of United Nations specialized agencies, international organizations and development partners, together with the Philippine Government, according to a DFA press release. Read more

POEA lifts ban on OFW deployment to Libya

The Governing Board of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) issued this week Resolution No. 10 Series of 2011 lifting the ban on the deployment of returning overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to Libya.
Labor chief Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz, the Chairman of the Governing Board, said the resolution takes effect immediately and would allow the gradual re-deployment of returning workers in the medical and oil sectors only, subject to proof of existing employment as determined by the POEA. Read more
Baldoz urges OFWs to avail of National Reintegration Program

Labor chief Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz is encouraging overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) coming home for Christmas to go into business and avail of the national government’s PhP2 billion OFW National Reintegration Program.
“I would advise our OFWs these holidays to discuss and plan with their loved ones the opportunities offered by the National Reintegration Program and consider the option of going into business,” Baldoz said, according to a Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) press release. Read more

Filipinos both here and abroad can do something to help the victims of tropical storm Sendong (international code name Washi), especially in the port cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan.
According to Philippine Daily Inquirer news, the flash floods and landslides have left 533 dead while 239 are missing, said the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. Read more
