President to honor 2011 Bagong Bayani awardees
The 2011 Bagong Bayani Awards (BBA) will honor outstanding overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in ceremonies led by President Benigno S Aquino III at Malacañang’s Rizal Hall on December 1.
A total of 15 OFWs, as well as seafarers who manned three international vessels, will be awarded at the BBA, according to a news release posted in the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) website. Read more
China Supreme Court affirms death sentence of Filipino

A 35-year-old Filipino who received a death sentence for heroin trafficking is scheduled for execution on December 8 after China’s Supreme People’s Court upheld the lower court’s ruling, said the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
According to a Philippine Daily Inquirer report, President Benigno S Aquino III and Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario have appealed for life imprisonment instead through a letter to President Hu Jintao and representations with the Chinese Embassy in Makati City, respectively. Read more
OFWs return for Christmas

Thousands of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are expected to come home for Christmas as six planes flew in mostly OFWs from the Middle East to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) yesterday, according to a Philippine Star news report.
Airport records showed that in just the first week of December last year, more than 200,000 passengers–including OFWs and balikbayans–arrived in the country. Read more
OFWs, other foreigners told to leave Lebanon town

Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and other foreigners without rental leases, identification papers and legal contracts will be evicted from the municipality of Burj Hammud in Beirut by end November, according to Philippine Daily Inquirer news.
Those affected also include Syrian Kurds and other workers from Sri Lanka and African countries who live in affordable housing units without signed rental agreements, which is the common practice in the area. Read more
OWWA goes after officers who failed to remit collections

Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) head Carmelita S Dimzon said last week the OWWA has already filed administrative cases and withheld the salaries and other benefits of officers and personnel who have failed to remit collections and liquidate their cash advances, according to a Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) press release.
“The Commission on Audit (COA) knows this. We are very transparent. In the course of our exit interview with the COA, which is a standard procedure, we explained to the auditors the circumstance of the issues, the amounts involved, the OWWA’s predicament in enforcing collection, and the solid, specific steps we have undertaken,” said Dimzon in response to media reports about the unremitted collections and unliquidated cash advances. PAL flights back to normal

Philippine Airlines (PAL) will begin full operations Thursday, November 24, after it decreased domestic and international flights in October due to the outsourcing program that resulted in the separation of more than 2,300 employees.

Kuala Lumpur archbishop values contributions of Filipinos

Archibishop Tan Sri Datuk Murphy Pakiam of the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur cited the contributions of Filipino parishoners during the courtesy call of Philippine Ambassador-designate J Eduardo Malaya last week, according to Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) news.
The initiatives of Catholic Filipinos in Malaysia’s capital include the Tahanang Filipino Community and the Migrants Capability Enhancement Program (CAPE), which operates from St. John’s Cathedral. Read more
COA reports P21 million in OWWA funds not yet remitted

The Commission on Audit (COA) said in its 2010 report that PhP21.587 million collected from overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) for the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration’s (OWWA) voluntary membership program were not remitted for periods ranging from 1-10 years.
According to a Philippine Daily Inquirer report, COA said OWWA officers in foreign posts should remit monthly collections to the OWWA Land Bank-Manila dollar account on or before the fifth day of the following month. Read more
