PH Embassy PH studies possibility of reopening embassy, lifting OFW deployment ban in IraqA five-man team from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is in Iraq to study the possibility of reopening the Philippine Embassy, of lifting the overseas Filipino worker (OFW) deployment ban, and to look into the condition of the 4,000 OFWs there.

According to a DFA press release, the delegation will look into how the scheduled withdrawal of American military forces in December will affect the overall security situation in Iraq and how this would impact on the possible deployment of Filipino workers. Read more

The American Association of International Healthcare Recruitment (AAIHR) is helping Filipino therapists who continue to face difficulties even after the ban imposed on them from taking the US National Physical Therapy Examination (NTPE) was lifted. library 113 OFW dependents apply for college scholarship in Region 8A total of 113 fourth year high school students who are dependents of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) applied for the Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) in Region 8 alone, according to an Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) press release.

OWWA-Regional Welfare Office No.8 (OWWA-RWO8) processed 71 applications from the province of Leyte, 25 from Southern Leyte, seven from Eastern Samar, five from Biliran, three from Western Samar and 2 from Northern Samar. Read more

According to a BSP press release, for the first seven months of 2011, remittances increased by 6.3% to $11.4 billion, with remittances from land-based and sea-based workers rising by 4.3% and 14.1%, respectively. Read more

Under the program, beneficiaries receive a package of entrepreneurial assistance in the form of built-in training provided either by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) or the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and a P10,000 capital to start a home-based business–such as reflexology; cosmetology; production of bath soap, scented oils, herbal medication and skin health treatment; manicure/pedicure; fashion accessories repair; and food processing.
