Ship with Filipino seafarers repels piracy attack

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in a press release that a Cyprus-flagged and owned container vessel with 25 Filipino seafarers successfully repelled a piracy attack last September 20.

The MV Pacific Express was attacked by armed pirates approximately 180 nautical miles east-southeast of Mombasa, Kenya, prompting the vessel’s captain to send a distress call, which alerted the navy vessel Andreadoria to come to their rescue. Read more

POEA reiterates total deployment ban in Libya

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) warns job applicants of a scheme used by workers who want to return to Libya using another country like Tunisia as entry point.

POEA Administrator Carlos S Cao Jr said that 59 teachers who were repatriated from Libya early this year reportedly plan to go back to the said country despite the existing deployment ban. Read more

OWWA releases OFW business training dates for September-October

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) in the National Capital Region (NCR) has set the business training schedules in September-October 2011 for overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who wish to avail of the OFW Reintegration Loan Program.

Completing the Enterprise Development Training (EDT) and presenting the OFW’s credit history are among the requirements for a business loan ranging from PhP300,000-P2 million. Read more

The Philippines is confident that the situation in Iraq will continue to improve despite the series of deadly bomb explosions that shook Baghdad on Friday while a delegation from Manila was in the capital to assess the peace and order condition.

PH Embassy in Riyadh clarifies police clearance requirements

The Philippine Embassy in Riyadh reported that Filipinos who used to reside in Saudi Arabia and are seeking permanent residence or employment in other countries are often required to submit a police clearance from countries where they had previously resided.

PH to intensify repatriation efforts in Yemen

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said last weekend that it will intensify efforts to bring home Filipinos in Yemen due to the possible worsening of the political-security situation in the capital city of Sanaa.

According to a DFA press release, a total of 282 Filipinos have been repatriated from Yemen since Alert Level 3, or voluntary repatriation on government’s expense, was raised on May 24 in all areas of Yemen. Alert Level 4, or mandatory evacuation, was eventually raised in Sanaa on June 6. Read more
