PH issues total OFW deployment ban in Syria, voluntary repatriation now in place

Deployment of all overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to Syria, including those who are returning as rehires, has been suspended after the country was placed under alert level 3 by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
This also means that voluntary and assisted repatriation of Filipinos in Syria is now in place. The Philippine Government advises all Filipinos not to travel to Syria at this time. Read more

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) began implementing the guidelines issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on obtaining legal documents for employment in Russia.
POEA Administrator Carlos Cao Jr said the DFA advises Filipinos who wish to work in Russia to obtain working visas instead of commercial visas. Read more

OWWA establishes OFW reintegration facility in Baguio

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration in the Cordillera Administrative Region (OWWA-CAR) established the OFW (Overseas Filipino Worker) Reintegration Training Room last month to enhance the implementation of the OFW Reintegration Program, benefiting returnees and their families.
According to an OWWA press release, the facility is located at the OWWA-CAR Regional Office, Manongdo Building, Private Road, Magsaysay Avenue, Baguio City. Read more
Remittances reach US$9.6 billion in 1st half of 2011

Remittances coursed through banks from January-June 2011 reached US$9.6 billion, posting a growth of 6.3% compared to the total for the same period in 2010, according to a Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) press release.
Remittances in June 2011 reached a record high of US$1.7 billion, increasing by 7% compared to the figure in June last year, said BSP Governor Amando M Tetangco Jr today. Read more

Family members of most temporary foreign workers in British Columbia (BC), the westernmost province of Canada, will be able to work for any employer in the province, thanks to a pilot project launched Friday.
The announcement was made by Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney and British Columbia Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation Pat Bell, according to a Citizenship and Immigration Canada media release. Read more

OFWs warned against illegal recruiters for Macau jobs

Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) head Carlos S Cao Jr told job applicants to be cautious of recruitment agencies based in some Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) countries that offer employment in Macau’s hotels and casinos even without authorization from the employers.
In a news advisory, the POEA said there were reports that a hundred overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are now stranded in China without the promised employment. Read more

Administrator Carlos S Cao Jr clarified that the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) has no lending facility for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) after a suspect was nabbed for allegedly collecting fees from applicants for a POEA cash loan.
Administrator Cao said a couple from Zamboanga City sought help from POEA security officers when the alleged fixer failed to give them the amount they were borrowing. Read more
