Many OFWs interested to be entrepreneurs

Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) have been responding to the call of President Benigno S Aquino to avail of the PhP2-billion OFW Reintegration Loan program for entrepreneurs, according to Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) news.
In the National Capital Region (NCR) alone, 1,834 OFWs attended the program orientation at OWWA Center from June 8-July 4, based on a report from OWWA Administrator Carmelita S Dimzon. Read more
Labor chief orders urgent POEA reforms

Labor chief Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz ordered Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) head Carlos Cao Jr to immediately implement urgent reforms at the POEA to ensure that it remains responsive to the needs of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) is accepting nominations for the 2011 Model Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) Family of the Year Award (MOFYA).

Libyan Dinar no longer convertible to peso

Banks no longer accept the Libyan Dinar from overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) for conversion to Philippine Pesos.
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) issued a memorandum in May to all banks stating that effective July 1, 2011 the Libyan currency would no longer be converted into Philippine Pesos. Read more

According to news from the UK Border Agency, beginning August 9, 2011 those who have been recognized or have the potential to excel in their field can apply under a new category called Tier 1 (Exceptional talent). Read more

Cebu declared as ASEAN City of Culture

Cebu City was declared as an Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) City of Culture in lavish ceremonies held last week at various parts of the city, according to a Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) press release.
The highlight of the event was the unveiling of the “Cebu City as ASEAN City of Culture” marker at the Talamban Family Park, the same spot where the 12th ASEAN Summit marker was placed. Read more
Baldoz promotes self-employment to OFWs in CARAGA

Labor chief Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz advocated self-employment to returning overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) during the 68th Regional Development Council (RDC) meeting of the CARAGA Region at the Gateway Hotel last week, according to Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) news.
Baldoz spoke about the DOLE’s reform initiatives, particularly its employment and livelihood projects in CARAGA. These include the PhP2 billion loan fund under the national reintegration program for OFWs, which returning OFWs can avail of for a new small business project or for an existing one. Read more
