DOLE hails law lifting night work prohibition for women

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) welcomed Monday the signing into law of the version of a bill lifting the night work prohibition for women workers, giving women equal access to employment opportunities.

HRD Korea launches essay contest for EPS returnees

Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who have successfully finished working in Korea under the Employment Permit System (EPS) are invited to join an essay writing contest held by the Human Resources Development Service of Korea (HRD Korea).
Winners will receive cash prizes and the first and second prize winners will have the opportunity to lecture in the returnee program, according to information on the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) website. Read more

UAE to launch contract validation program

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will launch the contract validation program to eliminate contract substitution by July 2011.
According to a Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) press release, the contract validation program is an electronic system of registering and recording migrant workers’ employment contracts. The system will be a basis for the processing of visas and is part of UAE initiatives to further protect migrant workers, including overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). Read more

Whenever I think of Taipei, I remember overcast skies, scooters and motorbikes zooming by, and generous servings of sticky rice topped with slices of beef, pork or chicken.
I was there for six weeks of training and I had lunch at the eateries and small restaurants located on a side street near the building of our head office on Nanking E Road. The meals were fairly simply and cheap but also tasty and filling–like tapsilog but without the egg. And it wasn’t hard to get used to the glutinous rice or the chopsticks. Read more
UAE to offer low-cost loans to OFWs–Baldoz

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will offer overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families low-cost loans under the Emirates’ Wage Protection Scheme, said Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz last week.
According to a DOLE press release, Baldoz met with H.E. Sarq Ghobash, UAE Minister of Labor, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva during the 100th International Labor Organization (ILO) conference. Read more
PH to ratify treaty protecting domestic workers

The Philippines is among two countries that said they would ratify the landmark treaty that the International Labor Organization (ILO) passed yesterday to ensure protection and decent work for domestic workers.
According to a Philippine Daily Inquirer report, the new convention ensuring that domestic workers enjoy conditions which are “not less favorable” compared to other workers–including a full rest day weekly and annual leave–will come into effect once ratified by the Philippines and Uruguay. Decent work for domestic workers pushed in ILO

The International Labor Organization’s (ILO) Committee on Domestic Workers, which was chaired by the Philippines, adopted a report containing landmark instruments that would lead to worldwide recognition of domestic work as decent work by ensuring domestic workers’ protection, equal rights and equal opportunities.
Under the leadership of Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Undersecretary Hans Leo Cacdac, the committee adopted the report containing the Convention and Recommendation on Domestic Workers for consideration during the plenary session of the ILO Conference on June 15 in Geneva, said labor chief Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz.
