Labor chief Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz said this week the new Saudization program should not be a cause of undue worry because it may have only very minimal impact on prospective overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) bound for Saudi Arabia and on OFWs who are already there.
“Lately, some alarm bells are being rung about the new Saudization program known as ‘Nitaqat’ (zones or ranges in Arabic), but I assure our workers and our people that this is no cause for undue worry,” Baldoz said, according to a Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) press release. Read more
POEA clarifies balik-manggagawa procedures

POEA Advisory No. 31, Series af 2011 (June 24, 2011)
Further to POEA Advisory No. 30, Series af 2011, on the revised procedures in the processing of Balik-manggagawa (BM) or returning workers, it is hereby clarified that the existing one-day processing of BM documents is still in place. The new two-phase procedure merely provides options to returning workers to manage their time better instead of waiting for hours for the release of their documents. Read more

Two days after the celebration of the 113th anniversary of Philippine Independence, another batch of modern day heroes was featured in Filipino Excellence in the Middle East, our radio program on Dubai Eye 103.8 FM.
Dante O Herras is the Finance Manager of Real FZE or the Chalhoub Group. He worked in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from 1985-1991. In 1996, Herras went to Dubai and has stayed in the emirates ever since. He is an active Filipino community leader with the Dubai Filipino Bowling Club and the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Read more
NZ changes immigration policy for students

New Zealand is introducing changes to the immigration policy for international students, which will come effect in July, announced Immigration Minister Jonathan Coleman early this month.
According to a media release from the minister, the changes will strengthen student visa requirements and conditions, improve access to study and training, and improve pathways to residence. Some changes will not take effect until early 2012 to remove any additional barriers to students affected by the Christchurch earthquake. Read more

POEA Bicol office reopens

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) reopened the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) office in Bicol region early this month to serve more than 50,000 Bicolano migrant workers, as well as applicants.
The POEA office in Region V, which is now headed by a member of the POEA Main Office’s Anti-Illegal Recruitment (AIR) Task Force, Rex Marcos, promises to do what it can to fight illegal recruitment, according to DOLE news. Read more
POEA to adopt new balik-manggagawa system in July

POEA Advisory No. 30, Series of 2011 (June 14, 2011)
All balik-manggagawa (BM)/vacationing overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are hereby informed on the revised procedures in the processing of BM travel exit clearance which will be adopted by the Balik-Manggagawa Processing Center (BMPC) at the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) main office.
The revised procedure intends to address the long queues and waiting time of BM workers applying for travel exit clearance by adopting adjustments in the procedures and processing time. Read more
