Korea to hire up to 7,100 OFWs in 2010

The 2010 Philippines’ quota of workers for South Korea under the Employment Permit System (EPS) is 7,100, up from last year’s 5,700, said Labor Chief Marianito D Roque.
This would mean that up to 7,100 Korean Language Test (KLT) passers can be placed in the roster of job-seekers from where employers can choose the worker they wish to hire. KLT is a pre-requisite in the hiring process of the South Korean government. Read more
Support program for OFWs in Korea

Preparations are on for the signing of an arrangement for the implementation of Korea’s Returnee Support Program for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), said Labor Chief Marianito D Roque.
According to Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) news, Roque said the program is patterned after the National Reintegration Program of the Philippines in which returning OFWs are given a chance to smoothly join the mainstream of society and are assisted through training and livelihood programs. DFA delivers certificates of canvass from embassies to COMELEC

The Department of Foreign Affairs-Overseas Absentee Voting Secretariat (DFA-OAVS) turned over this week the Certificates of Canvass (COCs) and Election Returns (ERs) from 89 embassies and consulates general to the Commission on Elections (COMELEC).
The tallies from four remaining embassies, which are being verified, will not have an effect on the outcome of the elections, the OAVS said, according to DFA news. Read more
Remittances reach US$4.3 Billion in Q1 2010

Total remittances for the first quarter of 2010 reached US$4.3 billion after $1.6 billion was recorded in March, the second highest monthly remittance level ever recorded, according to a media release from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).
The total amount of remittances from January-March 2010 is 7% higher than the amount recorded in the same period of 2009. Read more
ePassport now available in 19 DFA regional offices

Filipinos may now apply for electronic passports (ePassports) in the regional consular office (RCO) nearest them, after all 19 RCOs shifted to ePassports from machine readable passports in April 28, according to a Philippine Daily Inquirer report. Read more
RP ambassadors present credentials in Mongolia, Luxembourg

Francisco L Benedicto presented his credentials as non-resident ambassador to Mongolia to President Tsakhia Elbegdroj on May 13 at the State House in Ulaanbaatar, while Ambassador Enrique A Manalo presented his credentials to Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg last April 29 at the Grand Ducal Palace.
According to Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) news, Benedicto promised to increase bilateral trade and strengthen cultural and people-to-people exchanges between the Philippines and Mongolia. Read more

OFWs warned against carrying packages to Thailand

The Philippine Embassy in Bangkok strongly warns Filipinos to be wary of accepting and carrying packages or items to Thailand in exchange for money, according to Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) news.
There has been a significant increase in the number of Filipinos arrested for the possession of illegal substance/s upon entering Thailand at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport and at the country’s borders with Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. Read more
DFA advisory on travel to Bangkok
