OFWs warned against bogus jobs in Haiti

The Philippine Embassy in Cuba warned against recruiters offering bogus jobs in Haiti after two Filipinos who were promised work in Port-au-Prince found themselves jobless and stranded in the Haitian capital.
According to GMANEWS.TV, Philippine Ambassador to Cuba Macarthur Corsino said that after the devastating earthquake in Haiti last January, there are no available jobs for “walk-in” applicants. Read more

Remittances go up by 7.8%

Total remittances in the first two months of 2010 reached US$2.8 billion–7.8% higher than the amount recorded for the same period last year.
In February alone, a total of $1.4 billion in remittances was coursed through banks, according to a Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) press release.

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) will pay tribute to hardworking Filipino seafarers through the Search for Outstanding Filipino Seafarers, according to DOLE news.
The search is in line with the declaration of 2010 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as the “International Year of the Seafarer,” Labor Secretary Marianito D Roque said. Read more

OFWs cast their votes

Some 4,141 Filipino overseas absentee voters cast their ballots at 93 Philippine Embassies and Consulates General after April 10, the first day of overseas absentee voting (OAV) for the 2010 elections.
As of Sunday morning, the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong had the most number of ballots cast with 997, followed by the Philippine Embassy in London (558), and the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh (266), according to a Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) press release. Read more
Gov’t bonds for sale to OFWs

The Philippine Government will sell US$500 million worth retail treasury bonds (RTB) to Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) this month.
According to a Manila Bulletin report, the proceeds will “help underwrite the country’s multi-billion peso infrastructure buildup program and plug the projected higher budget deficit.” Read more
RP gears up for 2010 World Expo

The country is all set to showcase the dynamism of Philippine cities in the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, China, which has the theme “Better City, Better Life.”
It is the first World Expo to be held in a developing country, the biggest in terms of number of participants: 192 countries and 50 international organizations, and the longest–it will run for six months beginning May 1. Read more
