Remittances total $17.3 B in 2009

Remittances in 2009 reached US$17.3 billion, exceeding the $17.1 billion forecast of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).

RP-Taiwan agreement needed to save OFW jobs

The Philippines needs to sign a free trade agreement (FTA) with Taiwan to ensure that overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) keep their jobs, said Donald Lee, representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO).

According to a Malaya report, Lee said that for political reasons, most ASEAN countries, including the Philippines, are reluctant to sign an FTA with Taiwan ahead of a proposed economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA) between Taipei and Beijing. Read more

Labor Secretary Marianito D Roque called on overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families to contact the government for help in all cases of abuse that OFWs may encounter in the hands of their overseas employers.

Safeguards ensure OWWA fund won’t be used in elections

Internal control policies implemented by the board of trustees and the pre-audit procedures of the Commission on Audit (COA) ensure that the trust fund of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) will only be used to benefit its members, said OWWA Administrator Carmelita S Dimzon.

Ship with 17 Filipinos released in Somalia

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported Saturday that 17 Filipino seafarers onboard Taiwanese-flag vessel FV Win Far 161 were released by Somali pirates from captivity.

The fishing vessel was hijacked on April 6, 2009 off the coast of Seychelles. It was the longest held vessel by Somali pirates with Filipino crew. Read more
