RP envoy arrives in Haiti, 28 more Filipinos safe

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Tuesday that Philippine Ambassador to Cuba Macarthur Corsino and Vice Consul Jason Anasarias have arrived in Haiti and are coordinating with authorities to assist members of the Filipino community.
Meanwhile, Filipino community leader Tony Duran reported that 28 more Filipinos are in safe condition. Read more
Jason Aguilar Ivler arrested by NBI

Jason Aguilar Ivler, the real suspect in the killing of Renato Ebarle Jr, was arrested by National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) agents in Quezon City on Monday morning, according to ABS-CBN.
Earlier, Jason Aguilar, an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) employed as a welder in Qatar, was deported after he was mistaken for Ivler. Ivler, who has been in hiding for two months, is included in the International Police (Interpol) Red Notice List. Read more
2009 remittances reach $15.8 B in November

Remittances from overseas Filipinos reached US$1.5 billion in November, bringing the total for 2009 to $15.8 billion.
According to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), remittances grew by 11.3% in November, the highest growth rate since October 2008. Meanwhile, total remittances for the past 11 months (January to November) is 5.1% higher than the level recorded for the same period in 2008. Read more
Filipina rescued from collapsed supermarket in Haiti

One of three Filipinas trapped inside a collapsed supermarket in Port-au-Prince, Haiti has been rescued and is now safe.
According to Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) news, Lieutenant Colonel Lope C Dagoy, commander of the 10th Philippine Contingent serving in Haiti, said Aurora Aguinado is “safe and sound” after she was rescued inside the Caribbean Supermarket. Read more
Pinoy chef creates gingerbread replica of St Basil’s Cathedral

A Filipino pastry chef has created a replica of Moscow’s St Basil’s Cathedral, which has drawn much attention in the hotel lobby of the Ritz Carlton Hotel in the Russian capital.
Philippine Ambassador to Moscow Victor G Garcia III congratulated Chef Troman Felizmenio for creating the two-meter high cake replica of the famous structure, according to Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) news. Read more
RP pushes for cooperation with Israel city

Philippine Ambassador to Israel Petronila P Garcia met with Ashdod Mayor Yehiel Lasri to encourage cooperation between the Philippines and Ashdod in the field of trade, culture and tourism, according to Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) news.
Ashdod is the fifth largest city in Israel and is an important regional industrial center. The Port of Ashdod is Israel’s largest port, accounting for 60% of the country’s incoming goods. Read more
POEA advisory on UK jobs

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) has advised overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who want to work in the United Kingdom (UK) to check with the POEA if the companies they are applying for are registered or accredited under a licensed recruitment agency.
According to an article in the GMANews.TV website, POEA Administrator Jennifer Manalili also said OFWs should learn more about the requirements and important details involved in working in the UK. Read more
Arnis declared as national sport

Arnis is now the country’s national sport after President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed Republic Act (RA) 9850 last year, according to news from the Office of the Press Secretary (OPS).
The law elevates arnis to the top honor in local sports competitions. Read more
MV Aegean Wind crew assured of benefits

The ship owner, manning agency and insurers of MV Aegean Wind assured Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Alberto G Romulo that the nine Filipino survivors will get their benefits, according to DFA news.
MV Aegean Wind caught fire in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Venezuela last December 25. Nine died, including six Filipinos. Meanwhile, the five people who were injured in the incident included two Filipinos. Read more
OWWA interventions for victims of piracy

Seafarers who become victims of piracy will be assisted by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) through interventions such as monitoring their condition outside the country and providing psycho-social services when needed.
OWWA Administrator Carmelita S Dimzon informed the audience at the Summit on Interventions to Address Piracy-Related Issues: A Tripartite Approach last Friday that these services will be available to seafarers who are OWWA members. Read more
