RP to repatriate 70 Filipinos in Haiti

Repatriation is underway for Filipinos in Haiti, said Ed Malaya, Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) spokesperson over an interview on ANC News today.
Of the 217 Filipinos who have been accounted for by Filipino community leaders since the 7.0 earthquake struck the Caribbean island nation on January 12, 70 have decided to return to the Philippines. Read more
Noli to appeal OFW’s death sentence in Kuwait

Vice President Noli De Castro will appeal for the life of overseas Filipino worker (OFW) Jakatia Pawa whose death sentence was affirmed by Kuwait’s highest court last January 19.
According to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is sending De Castro who will carry her letter addressed to the Emir of Kuwait asking for clemency. Read more

Manning recruitment agencies will provide free anti-piracy training and orientation for all departing seafarers effective February 1, 2010.
This was among the points agreed upon during the Summit on Interventions to Address Piracy Related Issues: A Tripartite Approach last January 8 in Intramuros, Manila, according to Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) news. Read more

Labor Secretary Marianito D Roque directed early this month the crackdown of fake AIDS test certificates which resulted in the deportation of 57 Filipino overseas performing artists (OPAs) from Seoul as of December last year.
Thorough investigations on a certain international recruitment agency are now ongoing. The agency allegedly issued fake AIDS test certificates resulting in the deportation of OPAs from Seoul, Korea, according to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). Read more
Pinoy peacekeepers continue rescue efforts at Haiti supermarket

Filipino peacekeepers continue efforts to rescue the two Filipinas trapped in the Haiti supermarket even after an American team has stopped their operations in the area.
According to ABS-CBN news, Lt Col Romeo Brawner, spokesperson of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), said the American search and rescue team has moved to another location where they think there is still hope of finding survivors. Read more

Registration for Korean Language Test postponed

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) has announced that the registration of workers for the sixth Employment Permit System-Korean Language Test (EPS-KLT) scheduled on January 25-29, 2010 is postponed until further notice, while some issues are still for clarification.
Applicants who have registered for the program earlier are encouraged to visit the POEA website regularly for further developments. Read more

The Philippine Embassy in Qatar has sent a note verbale to the Qatari Foreign Ministry to seek clarification on the circumstances surrounding the taking into custody and deportation of overseas Filipino worker (OFW) Jason Aguilar.
