New RP-Jordan agreement needed to protect OFWs

Philippine Ambassador to Jordan Julius D Torres said a new memorandum of agreement between the two countries is needed to ensure that overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are better protected.

OWWA communication teams to link Ondoy victims with OFW kin

Labor Secretary Marianito Roque directed the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), complemented by the Philippine Overseas Labor Offices (POLOs), to immediately activate communication teams to complement government evacuation centers in the calamity stricken areas.
As soon as the teams are formed, they will be deployed to the designated evacuation centers with communications equipment to facilitate link up and long distance communication bridges with the families of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the affected areas. Read more

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has mobilized Philippine embassies and consulate generals as conduits for donations and other forms of assistance from overseas Filipino community groups and individuals.

Citizenship amendments pass through Australian parliament

The Australian Citizenship Amendment (Citizenship Test Review and Other Measures) Bill 2009 passed through the Parliament this month.

22 MV Irene seamen to come home

The 22 Filipino seamen onboard the MV Irene are expected to arrive in the Philippines today after five months of captivity in the hands of Somali pirates.
According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Bright Maritime Corp, the manning agency of the newly released vessel said the 22 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) will arrive today at 3:30 pm on a flight from the Middle East. Read more
RP to appeal for int’l aid

The National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) will ask for international humanitarian assistance through the United Nations (UN) as a new weather disturbance approaches the country in the wake of Typhoon Ondoy (international code name Ketsana).
The NDCC, with authority given by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, will request the UN Resident Coordinator for International Humanitarian Assistance to coordinate an international appeal for the Philippines. Read more

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is warning the Filipino public against a text scam circulating in Austria and other countries.
The DFA discourages overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from responding to messages claiming they had won a large amount of money in an electronic lottery or raffle. Read more
