Libyan firms open doors to distressed OFWs

Five Libyan companies said they intend to absorb majority of 131 distressed overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the host country, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said this week.

According to earlier media reports, the OFWs accused their Libyan employer of allegedly transferring their work site illegally and reducing their wages by forcing them to sign new contracts. Read more

Following is a small tribute to a contemporary Filipino hero, Social Welfare DSWD Attaché Finardo G Cabilao (featured in photo), who was bludgeoned to death in his Kuala Lumpur apartment. He was found later by Philippine Embassy officials who went to check on him when he didn’t show up for work a second straight day without explanation. The writer is currently Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia, who was among those who first saw Mr. Cabilao’s battered, lifeless body.
