Government is unlikely to meet its target of 1 million overseas absentee voting (OAV) registrants as the August 31 deadline draws near.
The number of 2009 OAV registrants worldwide is at 157,398, according to a report from the OAV Secretariat of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). Read more

Libyan firms open doors to distressed OFWs

Five Libyan companies said they intend to absorb majority of 131 distressed overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the host country, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said this week.
According to earlier media reports, the OFWs accused their Libyan employer of allegedly transferring their work site illegally and reducing their wages by forcing them to sign new contracts. Read more
100 more nurses deployed under NARS

GlaxoSmithKline Foundation (GSKF) will deploy 100 nurses to 20 poor municipalities under Project NARS (Nurses Assigned in Rural Services).
Labor Secretary Marianito Roque and GSKF president Roberto Taboada signed the Memorandum of Agreement that calls for GSKF to provide nurses with an P8,000 stipend each, according to the Office of the Press Secretary (OPS). Read more

Filipino dancer and choreographer Jason Ignacio has been named finalist for the Metro DC Dance Award in Washington DC.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) will accept applications for the ePassport through the online appointment system starting August 26, Wednesday.

Filipino peacekeepers to be deployed to the Golan Heights

The Philippines will deploy peacekeepers in October to the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in the Golan Heights at the invitation of the United Nations Department for Peacekeeping Operations (UNDPKO).
UNDOF was established in 1974 with the signing of the Agreement to Disengage by Israel and Syria, and is tasked to monitor the areas of separation and limitation in the Golan Heights. Read more
Big drop in overseas workers in Australia except nurses

There has been a significant drop in the numbers of temporary skilled overseas workers coming to Australia as a result of the global economic crisis and changes implemented by the Rudd Government to give priority to Australian citizens.

Following is a small tribute to a contemporary Filipino hero, Social Welfare DSWD Attaché Finardo G Cabilao (featured in photo), who was bludgeoned to death in his Kuala Lumpur apartment. He was found later by Philippine Embassy officials who went to check on him when he didn’t show up for work a second straight day without explanation. January-June remittances at US$8.5 B

Remittances from overseas Filipinos reached a record high of US$1.5 billion in June, bringing the cumulative total for the first half of 2009 to $8.5 billion.
According to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), January to June 2009 registered a 2.9% growth from the level recorded during the same period in 2008. Read more
