Peace in Africa crucial for seafarers’ safety – GMA

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo cited the importance of maintaining peace and stability in Africa, which has a direct impact “on the safety and welfare of our overseas Filipinos, including our seafarers.”

Arroyo left for Libya today to attend the African Union’s Special Summit on the Settlement of Conflicts in Africa, according to the Office of the Press Secretary (OPS). Read more

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) will accept applications to the Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) until September 15, 2009.

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) repatriated 48 household service workers who decided to leave their jobs.

The overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) arrived from Riyadh last week via Gulf Air flight GF 154. The cost of the repatriation was shouldered by OWWA. Read more

Inang Yaya wins in Mexico film fest

Children ages 10 to 13 voted “Inang Yaya” as one of the winners in the 14th International Film Festival for Children in Mexico City this month.

The film, which stars Maricel Soriano and was directed by Pablo Biglang-Awa Jr and Veronica B Velasco, won an Honorable Mention Award, according to news from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). Read more

Ace Cruz won the best sci-fi picture of the year award for his film “Outrage” at the 2009 Action on Film (AOF) International Film Festival in Pasadena, California.

RP sets new records at 5th ASEAN para game

The Philippine team won 24 golds and broke new records in powerlifting, swimming and athletics during the 5th ASEAN Para Games held in Kuala Lumpur on August 15-19.

The Saudi Arabia Prosecutor’s Office has dropped the case against 18 Filipinos arrested for an alleged mixed gathering last August 14, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). Read more

The first school named after the Republic of the Philippines in Guayaquil, Ecuador was inaugurated last August 25.

Gov’t steps up campaign vs illegal recruitment

The Task Force Against Illegal Recruitment (TFAIR) arrested a Filipino illegal recruiter who has been wanted since 2007, and stopped the illegal deployment of 21 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

According to the Office of the Vice President (OVP), Jonathan Nawi Que was deported by the government of Singapore for various offenses and was arrested after he arrived at Diosdado Macapagal International Airport in Clark, Pampanga. Read more
