The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) belied reports that the Philippine Government failed to assist 15 undocumented overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in a palm oil plantation in Sabah.

GMA approves appeal fund for OFW in Kuwait

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo approved the release of US$25,000 (approximately P1.2 million) last week to save the life of overseas Filipino worker (OFW) Jakatia Pawa in Kuwait.
According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), DFA Undersecretary for Migrant Workers’ Affairs Esteban B Conejos Jr released the fund, which will be used by the department to appeal Pawa’s case with Kuwait’s Court of Cassation. The appeal will be done in consultation with Pawa’s lawyers. Read more

Neil Frank Ferrer was re-elected as the Chairman of the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

NZ cuts 44 jobs from skill shortage list

The Department of Labor of New Zealand removed 44 occupations from the Immediate Skill Shortage List (ISSL) after extensive consultations with industry groups, other stakeholders and relevant government agencies.
According to Immigration New Zealand, the list includes occupations deemed to be in immediate short-term shortage in the New Zealand labor market. Changes to the list took effect on June 15. Read more
Police rescue 97 victims of illegal recruitment

Police rescued 97 victims of illegal recruitment in Manila early this week after 22 of them filed a complaint.
According to the Manila Bulletin, the victims, most of them women, came from different provinces. They were allegedly convinced to pay the recruitment agency to process their job applications in the Middle East (Dubai, Qatar, Oman and Kuwait). Read more
