A total of 1,199 out of 2,744 examinees passed the May 2009 Civil Engineer Licensure Examination. Meanwhile, 527 out of 1,497 Registered Electrical Engineers; 465 out of 1,120 Registered Master Electricians; and 2 out of 2 Professional Electrical Engineers successfully passed the Electrical Engineer Licensure Examinations. Nanny hotline launched in Ontario

Ontario’s Ministry of Labor launched a toll-free hotline for foreign caregivers, including overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), so they can ask for advice on their rights under labor laws, and report abuse and exploitation.
The hotline, 1-866-372-3247, first received calls on the last week of April. Further investigation on abuse reports will be handled by a “specially trained team,” according to The Toronto Star. Read more
KSA online service for inquiries on iqamas, visas

Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) can now inquire about the status of their iqamas (residence cards) or get information on their application for exit and entry visas and other procedures through the internet.
Labor Secretary Marianito D Roque said last week that the KSA’s Ministry of Interior launched the online service, www.moi.gov.sa. The website allows Saudi citizens, OFWs and other expatriates to inquire about their IDs, iqamas, and visas as well as eligibility to perform Haj and other procedures in the Kingdom. Read more

Remittances up 3.1% despite crisis

Remittances from overseas Filipinos reached $4.1 billion in the first quarter of 2009, up by 2.7% from January-March 2008.
Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Amando M Tetangco Jr said on Friday that remittances for the month of March 2009 alone hit a record high of $1.5 billion, increasing by 15% from February’s $1.3 billion and 3.1% from March 2008. Read more
