Australia helps new migrants

Migrants, refugees and new citizens in Western Australia will receive additional support to settle and participate in the community under the Department of Immigration and Citizenship’s (DIAC) Settlement Grants Program.
The Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Senator Chris Evans, said 2.7 million Australian dollars will be given to 24 projects in 2009-10.
“These projects make a real difference to the lives of many new migrants and refugees by helping them acquire the crucial life skills and knowledge about life in Australia,” he said. Read more

Fil-Am symphony orchestra debuts in California

The Filipino-American Symphony Orchestra (FASO), the first Filipino symphony orchestra outside of the Philippines, held its first concert in mid-May at the Saban Theatre (formerly Wilshire Theater Beverly Hills) in Beverly Hills, California.
FASO is composed of around 60 musicians, all of Filipino descent. Robert “Bob” Shroder is music director. Read more
DOLE to hold three-day job fair

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) will hold the Kalayaan 2009 Mega Job and Livelihood Fair in 19 cities on June 12, 13, and 14 to mark the country’s celebration of Independence Day.
According to DOLE, nearly 400,000 jobs are up for grabs. Participating employers include 271 government agencies offering some 62,233 job vacancies, 761 private local employers offering 63,044 job vacancies, and 436 overseas recruitment agencies offering 273,830 land and sea-based opportunities. New labor pact to be signed in Seoul

The Philippines and the Republic of Korea (ROK) will sign 10 agreements, including the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for Employment Permit System (EPS), during President Arroyo’s visit to Seoul on May 30 to June 2.
The EPS deal is a labor arrangement allowing skilled Filipino workers to avail of job opportunities in South Korea. This MOU renews the expired 2006 arrangement. Read more
KSA sets new OFW minimum age limit

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has adjusted the minimum age requirement for some categories of overseas Filipino workers (OFW).

Filipinos in Spain raise funds for GK

Around 30 Filipinos, including Philippine Consul General to Barcelona Eduardo Jose A de Vega, raised funds for Gawad Kalinga (GK) by participating in an 11-kilometer fun run.
According to news from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), El Corte Inglés, Spain’s largest chain of department stores, organized the fun run held in Barcelona last May 24. Over 50,000 locals and foreigners participated in the event. Read more

Number of temporary skilled migrants in Australia falls

The number of overseas workers coming to Australia on temporary 457 visas has continued to fall in response to the slowing economy and changes implemented by the Rudd Government to protect local jobs.
But in spite of the decrease in temporary skilled migration visas, Senator Chris Evans, the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, said this week, “There will continue to be demand for skills in some sectors, such as healthcare, so there will still be a need for employers to access skilled overseas workers.” Read more
