RP steps up efforts to protect seafarers from pirates

The Philippine Government has stepped up both preventive and remedial actions to address the increasing number of piracy incidents and hostage-taking involving Filipino crew seafarers in the Gulf of Aden and in the Indian Ocean. This was disclosed by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in a statement last Friday.

DOLE finds jobs for stranded bus drivers in Dubai

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has found jobs in Qatar for many of the 137 Filipino bus drivers stranded in Dubai.
These overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) were recruited by a licensed placement agency in the Philippines to work in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The OFWs later found out that there were no jobs waiting for them in the UAE. Read more
Remittances up 2.5% in Jan-Feb

Remittances from overseas Filipinos reached $2.6 billion in the first two months of 2009, higher by 2.5% than January-February 2008. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) released the latest figures yesterday. The central bank is able to record only the remittances that are sent through the banking system.
BSP said remittances from sea-based and land-based workers for the two-month period grew by 6.1% and 1.7%, respectively. Read more
NZ to accept applications only from licensed immigration advisers

New Zealand wants all those who are providing advice on how to migrate to this country to get a license from its Immigration Advisers Authority.
The Immigration Advisers Licensing Act 2007 requires advisers in New Zealand to have a license starting May 4, 2009. Advisers outside New Zealand must have a license starting May 4, 2010. Read more
New Zealand raises minimum wage

New Zealand has increased the minimum wage to NZ$12.50 (US$7.32) per hour from NZ$12 last April 1.
The new entrants’ minimum wage and training minimum wage were also raised to NZ$10.00 an hour from $9.60. Read more

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) will launch today, April 13, the Jobapalooza Mobile Caravan in collaboration with STI College and the Manila City government.
Labor and Employment Secretary Marianito D Roque said STI will bring the Jobapalooza Mobile Caravan which is equipped with Internet-ready computers to various barangays in Metro Manila to help job seekers register online for the Labor Day Jobapalooza. Question: Tanong ko lang kung tama ba na magbayad nang 4,000 plus Canadian dollars na placement fee? Kasi may agency akong napagtanungan dito sa Dubai. Ang sabi ay mag-pass daw ako ng necessary requirements like CV, NBI, etc. Pag may mahanap na na employer na mag-provide sa akin ng Working Visa for Canada, magbabayad daw ako nang 2,000 Canadian dollars para sa pag-process ng papers ko, at ‘pag mayroon ng LMO and Employment Visa from the employer saka na daw bayaran yung other 2,000 Canadian dollars. Australia revises 457 visa program
