More than 250,000 opportunities at Labor Day job fair

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Labor Day activities include a job fair featuring more than 250,000 job opportunities from 1,000 local companies and overseas recruiters.
Labor Secretary Marianito D. Roque said “Tayo Na! Trabaho Na! JOBapalooza ’09″ is drawing 20,603 job seekers who have already pre-registered for the event. It will be held at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City on May 1. Read more
OFW deployment to continue in spite of swine flu

Labor Secretary Marianito Roque said yesterday the Philippines will continue to deploy workers to countries affected by the swine flu since there are just scattered cases of the virus.
Roque added however that government might consider other options if the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Department of Health (DOH) raise their alarm levels. Read more
Canada’s new citizenship law in effect

Canada’s new law gives citizenship to many who lost it or didn’t have it due to outdated provisions in past legislation, announced Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney this month. The citizenship law, which took effect on April 17, also protects the value of Canadian citizenship for the future by limiting citizenship by descent.
“The Government of Canada takes Canadian citizenship seriously,” said Minister Kenney. “That is why we have taken concrete action to help many ‘lost Canadians’ who didn’t have citizenship and that is why we’re protecting its value for the future.”
DOLE, shipowners agree on measures to avoid pirate attacks

Labor Secretary Marianito Roque said the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the seafaring industry have agreed that shipowners employing Filipino seamen would only transit within the Maritime Security Patrol Area in the Gulf of Aden to avoid pirate attacks. Read more

Indonesian jailed for smuggling people into Australia

An Indonesian skipper was sentenced to a six-year jail term for smuggling 10 people into Australia.
In a statement issued last April 18, Senator Chris Evans, Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, said this only shows that those found guilty of people smuggling faced severe punishment. Read more
