Help desk opened in Oman to assist stranded OFWs

A help desk for Filipinos will be set up at the Al-Buraimi border in the Sultanate of Oman to assist those taking refuge in that country while waiting for a new re-entry visa to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) or repatriation to the Philippines, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) announced today.

The UAE has changed its immigration laws. Those with expired visas are no longer allowed to exit to Al-Buraimi, an oasis town in northeastern Oman on the UAE border, while waiting for their new UAE visa. Visa processing took only three to five days. Read more

Some overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who lost their jobs in Taiwan will avail of the livelihood assistance package being offered by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

While their case is being resolved at the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), the OFWs plan to put up a business together under the DOLE contingency plan for workers affected by the global financial crisis, said Labor and Employment Secretary Marianito D Roque on Wednesday.
