Filipinos to get greater access to jobs in Canada

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has formed a team to work out the implementation of labor agreements with the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Manitoba. These agreements seek to provide Filipino workers greater access to employment opportunities in Canada.
In a press release, Labor and Employment Secretary Marianito D Roque said the DOLE team will address urgent concerns affecting the employment of Filipino workers to Canada in areas such as ethical recruitment, human resource development (HRD), training and credentials recognition, and workers’ protection. POEA’s Dimzon appointed OWWA chief

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo recently appointed Carmelita S. Dimzon as the new Administrator of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).
In his weekly press briefing, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita announced that Dimzon will replace Marianito D. Roque who was earlier appointed by the President as Secretary for the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), a press release from Malacañang said. Read more
1,317 pass Electrical Engineer Licensure Exams

Less than half of those who took the Electrical Engineer Licensure Examinations this September passed the test.
Citing results released by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) on Wednesday, local news reports said only 1,317 out of 3,552 passed the exams recently given by the Board of Electrical Engineering. Read more
Occupations in shortage in New Zealand

A summary of the key findings from the 2007 Survey of Employers who have Recently Advertised (SERA) published by the New Zealand government in March 2008 showed that there was widespread skill and labour shortages in the country. “Only 54% of the advertised vacancies included in SERA 2007 were filled within 10 weeks of advertising, which is a 54% fill rate, the report said.... Filipino nurses may find it easier to find work in the United Kingdom if they take a course in international nursing in a reputable UK university first.
Philstar.com reported on Monday that the University of Hertfordshire, one of UK’s top universities, is offering licensed foreign nurses a two-year degree program in International Nursing that will enable them to become a registered nurse in the UK in two years. After they have obtained their Bachelor of Science degree in International Nursing, they can stay in the country for another two years using their student visa. If they later decide to take advance courses, this will enable them to obtain a five-year work and residency permit. Read more

LONDON, UK – New proposals for controlling the number of non-EU foreign workers coming to the United Kingdom, including changes to the shortage occupations list, were recently announced.

Norwegian shipping firm to hire more Filipinos

Odfjell, a shipping conglomerate based in Bergen, Norway, intends to hire 50 Filipino seamen every year in the next five years, a report from Manila-based BusinessWorld newspaper said.
The Norwegian company is adding two 40,000-ton vessels to its fleet a year. It plans to hire 25 seamen from the Philippines for each ship. The vessels will transport chemicals, acids, petroleum products and edible oils. Read more
