Filipino seafarers in high-risk area to get hazard pay

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) is set to issue a resolution that will double the wages of Filipino seafarers on ships passing through the Gulf of Aden, a high-risk area infested with pirates.
After a dialogue with ship owners, manning agencies and unions of officers and seafarers, Labor Secretary Marianito Roque announced yesterday that an emergency meeting of the governing board of the POEA is being called to pen the resolution that will amend the seafarers’ employment contracts, local news reports said. The POEA resolution will provide for hazard pay to seafarers. It will also allow them to terminate their contract rather than enter these dangerous waters. Read more

The Stationery Office and The Home Office released on Tuesday a new Study Guide to help candidates pass the British Citizenship test. This publication supports the official Life in the United Kingdom Handbook which was the bestselling political title of 2007.
The Life in the United Kingdom: Official Citizenship Test Study Guide provides the following:

Saudi Arabia recruiting 2,000 Filipino nurses

Migrant workers’ group oppose new Taiwan tax

The Asia Pacific Mission for Migrants is lobbying against the implementation of a 20% tax on foreigners, including migrant workers, who stay in Taiwan for 183 days or less, starting January 2009. The new tax was approved last August 13. Read more
Undocumented Filipinos in Sabah get travel papers

The Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur has dispatched a consular team, headed by Vice-Consul Shirlene Mananquil, to Sabah to assist the large number of undocumented Filipinos in the area. These Filipinos need travel papers so that their stay and employment in Malaysia could be legalized, or they could return to the Philippines. Read more
