25,000 seafarers needed in 2015

The global shipping industry is expected to employ an additional 25,000 seafarers in 2015.
Filipinos currently comprise about 30% of global shipping’s total manpower. Over 240, 000 Filipinos are hired by foreign shipowners every year. The demand for Filipino seafarers has been growing at an average of 10 percent annually.
The POEA reported that the demand for Filipino seafarers will increase with the continued hiring of shipping employers from Cyprus, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Greece, Norway, Netherlands, Belgium, UK, USA, Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Japan.
The Philippine government is looking to up the ante by making the country the main source of quality managers and officers for the world shipping fleet in 2008 and beyond. At present, only one out of every three Filipino seamen serves as a ship officer.... Read more
11,500 Filipinos granted UK citizenship

London, UNITED KINGDOM – OVER 11,500 Filipinos were granted British citizenship in the United Kingdom, last year as overall figures rose to a record high last year, according to official figures from the Office for National Statistics.
The Home Office said that 164,635 people became UK Citizens in 2007, up 7% in a year, the highest number ever recorded. A quarter of the new citizenships, around 41,000, were given to children. And 29,000 people gained citizenship by marriage. Read more
