DFA warns OFWs about rising cases of illegal recruitment in China

The Philippine Embassy in Beijing and the Philippine Consulates General in Chongqing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Xiamen, Hong Kong and Macau are advising the public to be wary of employment offers in semi-skilled jobs in China, as these sectors remain restricted and closed to foreigners.
Filipinos are warned anew to beware of falling prey to unscrupulous parties who offer them jobs as household service workers (HSWs), teachers or musicians in China after the embassy and consulates general observed an increasing number of Filipinos who were recruited illegally. Read the story »
More caregivers needed in Taiwan
Taiwan is expected to hire more caregivers to attend to its aging population, said the Pilipino Manpower Agencies Accredited to Taiwan (Pilmat).
According to a Philippine Daily Inquirer report, Taiwan is now allowing foreign workers to stay up to 12 years for the sake of older citizens who will require their services. Read the story »

Mountaineer Romi Garduce made history as the first Filipino to reach the seven summits in the seven continents–Pito para sa Pilipino–after he planted the Philippine flag on the peak of Vinson Massif in Antartica on January 5 (January 6, Philippine time).

New shepherd leads Archdiocese of Manila

The Catholic Church in the Philippines rejoiced as a new shepherd, Archbishop Luis Antonio G Tagle, was installed last December 12 to lead the Archdiocese of Manila.
Tagle, 54, a native of Imus, Cavite, was chosen by Pope Benedict XVI to take over as 79-year-old Cardinal Gaudencio Rosales stepped down after eight years of service. Read the story »
